I’ve loved Embroidery since I was a little girl.   As far back as I can remember, every pillowcase, tablecloth and napkin at our house was adorned with a touch of colorful artwork, all hand-sewn on lazy summer afternoons that always included sweet iced tea (it’s the best y’all !) and a slice of homemade pie.

I can see it as clear as day . . .  my Grandmother and I sitting together for hours as she taught me the joy a creative mind can have with just a  needle and a bit of colorful thread.  I must admit, I was hooked from the start!

One of my favorite pieces was  a simple white tablecloth she made for my child-size table and chairs.  It was a mini-replica of one she’d sewn for herself and she intended to embroider a bouquet on each corner of her “adult version” and, of course, I wanted mine to have no less.

And so, we set out  to the fabric store (my Grandfather drove us and sat patiently in the car, she never drove), spending what seemed like an eternity searching through books and books of iron-on patterns and finally settled on, what appeared to be, a fairly simple sketch of spring flowers.

I could not wait to begin and quickly selected what had to be every shade of pink known to man for my creation.   Embroidery hoop tightened and needle on the ready, I watched the ease of her stitches and set out to create my own masterpiece.   I couldn’t count the hours I  spent at her side,  stitching and laughing as I unknowingly learned not only how to embroider but more importantly,  the magic of the ability to create something from nothing.   It took me several afternoons but I finally finished that piece of tablecloth art and I’ve been in love with anything embroidered ever since!

I’m so happy I still have my pretty pink floral creation – it holds so many precious memories for me.  It’s packed up with some other pieces my precious Grandmother handmade for me – some of which I had almost forgotten about.  I dug all of it out one day for my daughter to see when she was about five years old.  I found myself wishing my Grandmother could see her eyes light up as she picked up each piece.  When we came upon the my tablecloth she smiled broadly as I told her the story of how my talented Grandmother taught me the joy of expression through this colorful art.   And much to my delight, I was thrilled when she asked if she could create her own as she ran her tiny fingers over the bumpy stitches I’d worked so hard on perfecting.  I couldn’t wait to make an apple pie and pour some sweet tea . . . .
